What is a pipeline in oil and gas?

Oil pipelines are made of steel or plastic pipes that are usually buried or connected to storage tanks, tanks to motor oil tankers/chemical tankers.

Oil is moved through the pipelines by pumping stations along the pipelines. Natural gas (and similar gaseous fuels) are compressed into liquids called natural gas liquids (NGLs). Natural gas pipelines are constructed of carbon steel.

Ultrasonic testing is performed on pipelines to assess any issues such as cracks, corrosion or changes in wall thickness. The testing uses equipment that emits high-frequency sound waves into the pipeline and analyses the returning waves as an indication of a problem.
