The scrap industry goes hand in hand with the recycling industry. Over the years recycling has become a multibillion dollar industry.
A globally connected industry has given a rise to scams within this industry.
AIM Control (AIM Group®) inspectors have even seen containers full of dust and foreign matters about to be shipped instead of scrap.
Scrap inspection should be a necessity for exporter or importers, also who’s scrap metal purchasers in the industry around the world.
Accredited inspectors and laboratory technicians from AIM Control (AIM Group®) carry out scrap inspection services at any point of the supply chain.

Scrap metal inspection can be very tricky since there are multiple aspects that need to be looked over. After a thorough visual inspection with photographic evidence,
AIM Control (AIM Group®) inspects for impurities, fatigue, radiation, . . . the inspectors also check for toxins, chemicals and hazardous gasses which are part and parcel of scrap metal.
With AIM Control (AIM Group®) network of lab testing partners we conduct testing for silver nitrate in order to make sure if there is any risk of radioactivity and chloride residue.
Ferrous metals we inspect:
Cast iron scrap
Railway/Railroad scrap
Boring scrap
Auto scrap

The distinctiveness of scrap inspection is mainly due to an non-uniform composition of the scrap. Rates of Composition of the scrap determine the class of the cargo.
Further difficulties of scrap metal inspection are due to possible radiation of the cargo as well as inclusion of explosive pieces. Therefore proper control of radiation and explosion safety is required. In this case, the background radiation and density are the determining indicators of the quality of scrap metal. The density index should be in the range of 0.8-1.3 t / m3, and the background radiation level should not exceed 0.02 μR / h.
Incoming/outgoing scrap inspection
It is carried out during the procurement, delivery of the cargo to warehouses or to the port, or during removal from the warehouses of metallurgical enterprises.
The AIM Control (AIM Group®) inspectors team will visually assess the condition of the premises for the suitability for cargo storage; will check scrap metal for compliance with the required class of the metal, inspect it for the presence of contamination, oiliness, corrosion, the presence of foreign non-metallic objects, non-ferrous metals in the scrap of ferrous metals, explosive substances and their residues; measure the background radiation; will check the weight of the incoming or unloaded cargo, take samples.
Acceptance of cleanliness containers / holds of vessels before loading scrap:
This is a visual inspection of containers and cargo holds of ocean vessel for their cleanliness and suitability for scrap transportation. The surveyors carefully examines their internal surfaces, checks the integrity and condition of locks, hinges and other fasteners on the container doors, rubber seals for container doors and hold covers.
Visual control of the loading process and sampling of scrap:
During loading, the inspector controls the loading of scrap, confirms the gross / net weight during re-weighing; in the case of loading scrap into the holds - the initial, intermediate and final check of the weight of the loaded cargo by the draft survey method, controls the fumigation process; conducts a visual assessment of the quality of the cargo, takes samples in accordance with sampling rules, forms composite samples. At the end of the loading, the inspector will seal the loaded containers or holds. He enters all the data into reports to which the client gets direct access. Note that the AIM Control (AIM Group®) loading inspection and sampling can be carried out around the clock on 24/7 basis.
Laboratory analyzes of scrap quality.
We check the quality of scrap exclusively in accredited laboratories in accordance with the requirements of agreed per contract international standards.
Compliance of a lot of scrap metal with the requirements of contract specifications is determined visually. If the evaluation results are in doubt, then the batch can be checked using technical means (as cargo separation for example) and measuring equipment - though such determination is difficult and financially expensive, therefore the experience of attending inspector is of paramount importance.
The weight and dimensions of lumpy scrap metal are controlled by weighing and measuring.
To check scrap metal for contamination, size, weight, density, composition of alloyed components (impurities), at least five samples are usually taken.
To determine the presence of alloyed and non-ferrous metals or lump steel and cast iron scrap and waste in the proper scrap metal, the selected pieces are checked with a hand magnet, on a steeloscope or using other instruments and control methods.
The actual contamination of lump scrap metal with harmless impurities is determined by weighing the sample, cleaning it from non-metallic impurities using a tumbling drum or three times dropping from a height of two meters onto a concrete platform and re-weighing.
The contamination of steel or cast iron shavings with harmless impurities, oil and other harmful impurities is determined by washing the sampled sample with technical detergents, drying the separation from non-magnetic impurities, and weighing the shavings.
The contamination of cold-pressed bags and briquettes with harmless and harmful impurities is taken equal to the content of these impurities in the input raw materials for bags and briquettes.
The content of steel shavings in the bags is controlled during their manufacture by weighing, as well as by breaking/opening five control bags or briquettes and visual inspection of the content.
The density of packages and briquettes is determined by the ratio of their mass to volume.
The chemical composition of alloyed scrap metal is determined in accordance with regulatory documents or other methods that are not inferior to the standardized requirement
Rapid analysis of the chemical composition of scrap metal is carried out using X-ray spectrometers and analyzers, photovoltaic installations, etc., providing a measurement error specified in standards or other regulatory documents on analysis methods for the corresponding ranges of the mass fraction of elements.
If unsatisfactory test results are obtained for at least one of the indicators, a repeated test is carried out on it on a doubled number of samples taken from the same batch. Retest results apply to the entire batch.
Photo and video report.
The inspector records each stage of the inspection with photos and videos. All such data contain the date and time of recorded stage of inspection. At the end of the scrap inspection, AIM Control (AIM Group®) provides a detailed photo report of all stages of control and inspection.
Certificates.
Based on the results of the scrap inspection the final certificate or reports are issued. The client can received Our scrap metal quality and quantity certificates.

We provide the inspection services for scrap metal and plastics at three segments: at the loading port (local of seller); at discharging warehouse (receiver / buyer) and at other addresses.
At AIM Group's Inspections and Certification help ensure that the scrap metal meets the required standards and specifications for its intended purpose. This involves verifying factors such as metal composition, purity, dimensions, and absence of contaminants or impurities. also support to reduces waste and helps to preserve the environment for future generations.
with AIM Group's inspection services to scrap types, the primary objective of Quality Control is to identify and correct any deviations from the established quality standards. always protect our customers and their benefits.
High-quality scrap types requires to remove a low trace element content. Our Professionals can determine scrap quality through the use of grading systems that set minimum and maximum content for specific metal impurities.
In the scrap trading business, commercial fraud occurs frequently and the consequences cause a lot of difficulties for the assessor and surveyors and also a lot of financial loss for the buyer or seller. Therefore, in finding a third-party assessment inspection company with full experience and capacity like our AIM Group is not easy.
For examples:
In Bangladesh,
during a scrap inspection, our inspector was arrested by the receiver simply because he defended the correct survey results and refused signature to "false figures" by the buyer.
In India,
during a scrap unloading inspection, the receiver threatened to beat up our inspector if he did not agree to sign the “false figures” because they wanted to commit commercial fraud to take advantage of the reduced purchase price.
In Nigeria,
AIM Control Group's surveyor had stopped the loading process, because he found out the cargo in dirty and a lot of impurities (see more).
In Vietnam,
AIM Control surveyors surveyed and certified the scrap rate of the shipment when unloading the cargo and found that the impurity rate of the cargo was too high. This is evidence of litigation in the international commercial court for the customer.
