What is the AQL in standards?

AQL is Acceptance Quality Limit in quality inspections and control, AQL stands used for ‘Defect Limit‘ is defined as the quality level in ISO 2859-1: Edition (year of revision)

What are Defects?

There are a three of defects as CRITICAL / MAJOR / MINOR which are consisted of followings:

How do you calculate defects?

The formula of defect is the rate of the number of defective products that are inspected and found in the number of LOT SIZE samples calculated for per its total shipment.

  • Critical defects: totally unacceptable, a user might get harmed, or regulations are not respected (ZERO)
  • Major defects: these products would usually not be considered acceptable by the end user (2.5% Max)
  • Minor defects: there is some departure from specifications, but most users would not mind it (4.0% Max)

What is AQL in sampling plan?

What is AQL inspection level?

The inspection level sets the relative amount of inspection to be carried out. ISO 2859 provides 7 inspection levels but the general inspection levels (I, II and III). Level I is the least demanding and Level III is the most demanding.

EX:

  • “AQL is 1.5%” means “it is no more than 1.5% defective items in the whole order quantity”
  • AQL 2.5 is common criteria while shipment inspection for Garment exporters and apparel buyers to be used usually.
  • .65 AQL means that no more than 1% of the batch can be defective

Different inspection levels will be different numbers of samples to inspect and the AQL limits appropriate for each market (setting of a lower AQL for both major and minor defects if customers accept very few defects.

Recommendation

  • ISO 2859-1 definition of the AQL is confusing only.
  • The actual number of defectives that a particular plan allows as the UPPER confidence limit of the AQL value.
  • ISO 2859-1 standard is generally, there are other equivalent commercial standards in different countries.
  • In some specific cases, AQL cannot be used because of its limitation
